I was born in Bedford. Now I only know this because it’s one of those questions you have to answer on internet sites in order to get access to various things like your own money. Along with questions such as ‘What was your first dog called?’ and ‘What is your most memorable place?’

When I was a bit older we moved to Cornwall and so I spent most of my childhood there. I love it, and return there regularly. Just thinking about it makes me want to have some clotted cream and splits.

Back from foraging in the fridge for some clotted cream. I didn’t find any but I did find some honey yoghurt. After I left university (I studied Maths at Bristol), I went to Africa for a while, drank an awful lot of Malawi gin and spent some time with the Masai where I was constantly glued to the side of one warrior who would behead snakes with his machete if they came too close.

When I came back from Africa, I started up a company manufacturing popcorn (clearly my encounters with snakes and machetes had sent me over the edge). Contrary to newspaper reports this did not make me a millionaire. Or even close. That would be an awful lot of popcorn.

One very rainy day, the factory was flooded which pretty much closed down the company and I sold what was left on. Then I started writing…
